Burial mounds; facts or fiction?

Lawrence Nzuve

Visitors to Koobi Fora; one of the sites under the brief of the National Museums of Kenya are assailed by a spectacular site.Except for the phobia that the local communities associate with many things no longer living, here lies a wonder. These are the huge burial mounds whose age has been the subject of debate for a long time. What however is not in contention is the sheer size and the materials used to cover the 'graves'. As part of appreciating history and the uniqueness of our country's Paleontological heritage, i will begin serializing this story and much more as
together we take this long road unto our past....this is what is Prehistory

A section of the road just before Sibiloi National Park; this area is dotted with many of these burial mounds stretching from small ones to giant hills (photo courtesy of Koobi Fora Research Project)
